Academic English: Reading, writing and presentation skills. In this course students will be involved in the production and authoring of academic reports using suitable writing templates and protocols such as referencing.
To improve the technical English communication skills and abilities through presentation (oral and visual) and academic writing for Engineering and Science students.
The course learning objectives are as follows:
On completion of this course participating students will be able to:
1. Develop the generic learning skills given in the overall program learning objectives;
2. Can critically interpret and analyse the main English communication models for when applied to social contexts including the world of work;
3. Develop personal skills of information literacy within the English language medium;
4. Can use online authoring tools within the English medium to develop academic and scientific presentations and reports; and,
5. Can deliver interactive presentations in English to live audiences.
Session 1:
Introduction to the course and the participants, learning objectives and eAssessment;
Session 2:
Defining technical/academic English and analysis of English communication through process 窶藁odels窶;
Session 3:
Techniques of presentation and report writing;
Session 4:
Developing presentation skills in English;
Session 5:
Using and applying authoring tools in English; and,
Session 6:
Plenary (Presentation, feedback and discussion of performance for future improvement).
No prescribed textbook. Open Educational Resources (OERs) will be used as given online.
It is expected that students have some competency in English and have enrolled onto the 窶廾nline Learning and ePortfolio窶 course.
Self-assessment report of learning activities. Collaborative Group work and reflective feedback demonstrating thinking skills and use of ICT tools to support critical and creative thinking.
This will reflect Achievement based Assessment for Learning using an online learning eportfolio containing the evidence of the learning activities as a form of eAssessment for course credit.

This course will be offered in a blended learning mode including both face to face and an online learning environment. All the course materials and activities will be available online.
