1.Introduction: Optics in organic material research ? motivation; organization of the lecture; history of optics
2.Character of light: Light as electromagnetic waves; electric and magnetic fields; Maxwell’s equations, wave equation; energy of light: the Poynting vector, pressure of light; light as particles
3.Propagation of light: Dispersion, Newton’s observation; microscopic theory of dispersion: Lorentz’s oscillator model; complex refractive index; dispersion in dense media: Clausius-Mossotti relation; non-resonant interaction of light with matter: scattering, refraction, reflection; Fresnel equations, reflectance, transmittance; basics of geometrical optics; applications of refraction and reflection: waveguides and optical fibers
4.Polarization of light: Linear, circular, elliptical polarization; principle of polarizers: anisotropy of optical phenomena; mathematical description of polarization: Jones vector and Jones matrix; phenomena related to polarization: optical activity, Faraday effect; electro-optical effects (Kerr effect)
5.Interference of light: General equation and conditions for interference; coherent light characteristics: coherence length and time; applications of interference: interferometers, dielectric thin films, interference filters
6.Diffraction of light: Basic physical principles of diffraction; diffraction on a single slit, multiple-slit diffraction, diffraction grating, principle of monochromator
7.Principle of laser: Spontaneous and stimulated emission, Einstein coefficients; population inversion, three level system; light amplification, gain, feedback in optical resonator; character of laser light, types of lasers
